Lt,

Thank you for these efforts & the follow up.

And coincidentally as I write this, much of the demolition & clean up of the St Michael's site has been completed.

Subject: RE: St Michael's Church Property & Nearby Resident Concerns

Good Afternoon,

I spoke with Mr. Ross via phone and met with his wife and son in person last month. They conveyed concerns regarding thefts and speeders- I sent a referral to the traffic unit for an increased patrol request.

His son accompanied me throughout the neighborhood to show me trails and any areas of concern. There are no specific encampments in the neighborhood- however, they did convey the concerns about stolen items from the carport.

It seems that the major issue was the attraction that the abandoned St. Michael’s Church provides. I went to St Michael’s and spoke with a construction worker who said the demolition was pushed back because of weather but is underway.

I provided my contact info to Mr. Ross to communicate any concerns.

Thank you.

Subject: St Michael's Church Property & Nearby Resident Concerns

Madam Manager,

Recently, I spoke to Mr Jordan Ross who lives in the Millhopper area.

Mr Ross had 2 primary overlapping concerns:

  • Encampment behaviors & vagrants near his house / neighborhood - 4122 NW 19 Place - They do not feel safe.
    • His neighborhood (name unknown) backs up to both a drainage swale & the Millhopper Publix plaza.
    • Trails around this area concern him since he has school age children, a family & is disabled.
    • He has had thefts of 2 bicycles &  lawn equipment & his family recovered one of the stolen bicycles.
    • He reported to GPD & then was instructed to fill out the online form which he did.
    • He indicated he spoke to 2 GPD sergeants he did not wish to identify since he felt they were frustrated with efforts also.
    • One encampment may be near NW 17th Place / 40th Street. On one trail, they have seen exposed needles.
  •
  • St Michaels' Church Property - NW 43rd Street / 16th Blvd - SW corner - Pics attached
    • This property was the subject of much 2022 CC discussion related to land use / zoning.
    • I viewed this property & it continues to be a hazard. No trespassing signs are not present.
    • There is broken glass, exposed nails, human waste, fire extinguishers, & trash everywhere as well as evidence of recent encampments on the property.
    • There is signage indicating demolition to begin May 15th but this has not occurred. There is a business sign with name & phone number for potential contact.

Please determine the best course of action.

I recommend that GPD contact Mr Ross reference his safety concerns & potentially check the area behind those residences.

For St Michael's, the property is a current hazard & Codes action or follow up is likely warranted.

I am hopeful we will also contact the businesses listed on the sign & inform them & ascertain their plan to clean up this property.
