| Subject: | [EXTERNAL] Urgent Concern Regarding ADA Transportation & Transportation Disadvantage program funding changes in Alachua County |

Good evening. I’m writing to express my deep concern about recent changes in ADA transportation services provided by MV Transportation, the designated Community Transportation Coordinator for Alachua County. Until July 1, 2025, my husband—who has Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia—relied on MV’s ADA transportation and/or Transportation Disadvantage program to attend the Easterseals Altrusa House in Gainesville. This service has been a lifeline for our family. As both his full-time caregiver and a full-time employee, the transportation allowed me to maintain my job while ensuring he received the care he needs. We had been paying $3 each way, which made it financially feasible. However, we were recently informed that due to new funding restrictions and changes to service area boundaries, MV will no longer provide transportation to our home in High Springs—despite it being within Alachua County. This decision has placed an overwhelming financial and emotional strain on our household. Additionally, we understand that RTS is considering taking over the paratransit program in-house and discontinuing its contract with MV. We are deeply concerned that RTS lacks the staffing, vehicles, safety protocols, and established client relationships needed to effectively manage this transition. If this change occurs, residents in surrounding areas could lose all access to critical services, including Transportation Disadvantaged and Elder Care programs, as well as emergency evacuation transport. These are lifelines for vulnerable populations in rural parts of the county. The loss of transportation by MV Transport has left us with no realistic way to access the only adult day care program that meets my husband’s needs. I simply cannot take two hours out of my workday for transportation, and we have no other options. I respectfully request that the Commission take immediate action to:
Please let me know if there are any programs, resources, or contacts you can connect me with in the meantime. Any support would be greatly appreciated during this challenging time. Thank you for your attention and consideration. Sincerely, Katisha Bryant 407-497-7416 |
