Community Update: Tom Petty Park Proposed Parking Lot Expansion

On Wednesday, July 2, the City of Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places (WSPP) Department held a virtual community workshop to discuss the proposed parking lot expansion at Tom Petty Park. More than twenty neighbors attended and provided their feedback on the proposal.
During the meeting, several community members voiced concerns about the proposed parking expansion, noting that it was not depicted in the master plan shared during the initial outreach for the broader park improvements. Additional concerns included the lack of data presented to support the need for additional parking, as well as dissatisfaction with the level of transparency and communication throughout the planning process.

Wild Spaces & Public Places has launched a dedicated project webpage for the Tom Petty Park Improvements. This page includes: - Public meeting information, including links to upcoming meetings and an archive of past meeting notices, minutes, presentations and handouts
- All previous community updates and City Commission agenda item notices
- Ongoing project updates, beginning now and continuing throughout the duration of the project

In addition, a 72-hour notification period has been established before any project-related item is scheduled on a City Commission agenda. “We Are on the Agenda” emails will continue to be sent (subscribe here) and will now also be posted on the new project webpage.
What’s Next Wild Spaces & Public Places will return to the City Commission to present the proposed parking lot expansion and receive further direction. The presentation will include an overview of the project’s history and a summary of public feedback. Staff will outline at least three options for consideration: a paved parking expansion, a stabilized grass parking expansion and eliminating the parking expansion from the project. In addition, staff is actively exploring a parking study to assess current conditions and anticipate future parking demand.
