Good afternoon,

I hope you are doing well! I am Mary Claire Jackson, a second year student at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. I am reaching out on behalf of the National Lawyers Guild chapter here at UF to invite District 1 Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker to be a guest speaker at our first general body meeting of 2025.

NLG intends to host a lunch meeting next Tuesday January 28th 12-1:15 at the Levin College of Law on campus. We are preparing a teach-in about local government and if you are available and would like to collaborate with us, we would love to have you! The meeting would be partially a general background about structure and how and when people can engage in governance followed by an opportunity for you to talk about your role and experience as a commissioner. Depending on time and preference we would also love to provide a short question and answer period.

As a general background, we are a local chapter created more recently as a small part of a much larger organization. The National Lawyers Guild was founded in 1937 as an association of progressive lawyers, jailhouse lawyers, legal workers and the like who came together because of a common will to reconstruct legal values to emphasize human rights over property rights. The Guild is the oldest and most extensive network of public interest and human rights activists working within the legal system. Our chapter has hosted events like a Voter Education Panel, a Voting Registration Drive, and Legal Observer Trainings.

I and some of our members had an opportunity in fall to attend a commission meeting and speak on the ordinance instituting the camping ban. I was just very touched by your courage and humanity in a difficult moment and believed you may be a good representative to speak with. If you are interested in speaking at the law school but next Tuesday will not work, we are absolutely flexible and have also floated February 5th as the first meeting date instead. Feel free to reach us at this email or either contact below. Thank you very much for your time.

Warm regards,

Mary Claire Jackson (she/they)
