Shalom Desmon - Gainesville City Commissioner District I,

The month of Elul began this week. It is the final month of the Jewish calendar year, the month before the High Holidays.

Elul is traditionally considered a month of reckoning, when we are meant to take stock of our behavior over the past year, much like a business takes an account every so often of its inventory, income, expenses, and so on. We look back at the year that has passed and we attempt to determine what we did right and what worked, and what could use improvement in the year to come.

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi – the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad – taught that during this month G-d’s attributes of mercy shine brighter than all year, and His glory is far more accessible than it usually is. With this knowledge, we are encouraged to work on our relationship with G-d in ways that might not have been possible throughout the year.

And if we may be so bold, we implore G-d to also take a reckoning of His actions in the past year. The Jewish people have suffered tremendously all year as a result of the horrific terrorist attacks last Simchat Torah, and as recently as this past week with the brutal murder of six of the hostages in Gaza.

We demand of G-d that we see His mercy in a most tangible manner, not leaving anything to the imagination.

Wishing Ya'll a Shabbat Shalom and blessings for peace and miracles in Israel and around the world. Go Gators!

SEE SOMETHING – SAY SOMETHING

Important Steps to follow

1) Always be aware of your surroundings and take notice of anything suspicious or out of the norm.

2) When possible, always try to be with other friends, neighbors or acquaintances, especially during the evening and night time hours.

3) If you see something in any way out of place or strange, say something!

If you ever feel that you are in danger, your safety is threatened or you are a victim or experience any hate, bias, violence or anti-Semitic attacks or incidents:

A) Immediately call 911 and report any and all incident to GPD, UPD or Alachua County Sheriffs.

B) If any incident happened or happens on the UF or SFC campuses, report it to the UPD and Student Affairs Office immediately, as well.

C) If any incident happens at a housing/apartment living complex, report it to the housing complex administrative office.

D) Please notify Rabbi Berl Goldman of any recent incidents that have happened to you or that you are aware of, or any future incidents. Text, email or call (352)256-3323 - Rabbi@JewishGator.com

SHOP LIFTING

An 80 year old woman was arrested for shop lifting. When she went before the judge he asked her, "What did you steal?"

She replied: a can of peaches.

The judge asked her why she had stolen them and she replied that she was hungry.

The judge then asked her how many peaches were in the can. She replied 6.

The judge then said, "I will give you 6 days in jail."

Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment the woman's husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could please say something.

He said, "What is it?"

The husband said "She also stole a can of peas."
