Hello Everyone.
Here is an update on Depot Station.
We are continuing to find several people sleeping in the park overnight. When this is allowed, the unfortunate product is when these folks have to go to the bathroom, they take cover on our leased area. Our crew has cleaned up human excrement 3 times in two weeks, and dealt with consistent urine smell in the old wood structure. I can send pics but I’m sure no one really needs to see that. We feel our staff certainly should not have to be cleaning this as you may imagine. I do not see Park ambassadors approaching these folks or police sweeping the area. Can we get an update on what is being done to help with this situation? Are Park Ambassadors clearing people out at 6am when they get there?
On a positive note I would like to fully express the gratitude we have for Gary Cothren. Since 2016 we have not been in a position of feeling supported down here on the regular demands of upkeep on this old structure. However, Gary’s knowledge of equipment, ability to get things done, and most importantly - excellent communication skill, are a reason to continue here at Depot Station. We feel perhaps for the first time in many years, we have a landlord. We appreciate the shift to a different air system, and we appreciate the cleaning, painting, and roof work that though may take some time, are lined up to be addressed.
In 2016, the then CRA pitched this project to us with two key elements to make business sense for us to to take on the project.
1) First the Gainesville CRA showed us the future renderings of The Power District with images of row housing and concentrated living to grow the Depot Park area. Unfortunately a couple years in, that entire project evaporated. Being here 8 years now, are there any plans moving that involve living expansion or office expansion into the “Power District”….?
2) There was to be constant programming from the City to keep the park active with events. In the first few years we had Paw Patrol Events, DJ Dad, Local food events, Dinner with City Leaders, movie nights on the Hill, annual Anniversary of the Depot Park, festivals, and lots of community gatherings. What has happened to the programming and special events that used to excite folks to come to this great park? What plan does the City have to improve programming and are there GCRA funds to send in the direction of Depot Park?
Thank you for your responses,
Scott/depot station
