AFC Celebrates Signing of LA GATOR Bill  

The American Federation for Children celebrates Governor Jeff Landry’s signing of the Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise (LA GATOR) Scholarship Program.

The program provides qualified parents with a flexible scholarship account, allowing them to customize their child’s K-12 education. When fully implemented, the LA GATOR program will be available to all Louisiana families. 
 
Statement from Ryan Cantrell, VP of Government Affairs, American Federation for Children:
 
“By championing true school choice in Louisiana, Governor Jeff Landry, Speaker Phillip DeVillier, bill sponsor Sen. Rick Edmonds, and Rep. Julie Emerson have cemented their unwavering commitment to students. We celebrate alongside countless Louisiana families who see this legislation as a lifeline and look forward to the floodgate of educational opportunities that the LA GATOR Scholarship Program will open.” 
 
Details:

•  LA GATOR Scholarships can be used for expenses including school tuition and fees, tutoring, educational therapies, textbooks and curricula, dual enrollment courses, and uniforms.

• Eligibility will ramp up in phases, reaching eligibility for all K-12 students in Louisiana by the program’s third phase.

• Beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year, eligibility is open to students entering kindergarten, students enrolled in a public school, students enrolled in an approved nonpublic school with a voucher through the Louisiana Scholarship Program, and students in an approved nonpublic school with a household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.

• By the third phase, all K-12 Louisiana students are eligible, with preference given to low-income families and students with special needs.

• The bill passed the House by a vote of 67-29 and the Senate by a vote of 23-14.
